SPF and ageing skin: The facts

Every brand under the sun seems to have its own sunscreen and they all claim to be the best. Of course they can't all be equal. What makes an SPF good and what should you be looking for in sunscreen products?

Here is everything you need to know to stop the sun from ageing your skin this summer (and all year long).

Is it essential to use SPF daily to protect our skin from UVA/UVB and premature ageing?

There are additional factors that spf use addresses also throughout the year like visible light and infrared-A that can affect the dermis causing aging (Heliocare addresses all)

If you are living in a country with sun exposure every day it is important to top up spf every two hours or by following brand instructions.

How can I tell a good SPF apart from a bad one?

All SPF with a factor 30 to 50 should protect your skin from the sun, but it is important to consider a broad-spectrum SPF which protects your skin against both UVA and UVB rays.

Apart from the sun protection factor, these lotions and creams also contain other elements such as moisturisers and oils, which directly affect your skin.

Cosmeceutical SPF are better than those from regular high street brands because the ingredients used are non-comedogenic and non-acnegenic. Using the wrong SPF can overload your endocrine system and cause unwanted breakouts.

Protecting your skin from the sun is important, but that shouldn't come at the cost of your fair, glowing skin. On the contrary, every product you use should aid your skin health.

Which sun protection factor do I need? 15, 30, 50?

Everyone in the UK needs at least SPF 30, all year long. This protection factor protects your skin for up to 8 hours. If your skin is particularly sensitive and you will be exposed to direct daylight for long periods of time, an SPF 50 is advisable.

Why does SPF irritate my skin? Is there a solution?

SPF can be divided in two categories: chemical and physical.
Chemical SPF can irritate the skin, which is especially harmful to people with rosacea.

If you have sensitive skin, avoid these chemical SPF and choose a physical SPF instead. This type of SPF sits on the epidermis by creating a barrier and blocking UV rays before they come in contact with the skin.

Chemical SPF penetrate the skin and absorb UVA and UVB from within. It does take time for the product to penetrate the skin and therefore it should be applied 20 minutes before exposure.

The downside of some chemical SPF is that they don't always protect against free radicals. Therefore it is important to consider which type of product you want to use.

Do sunblock supplements protect me from the sun?

Using sunblock capsules should not stop anyone from using topical SPF, especially when you're having high sun exposure. These supplements help strengthen your skin against the sun and are especially useful for people with an active lifestyle. A good topical SPF will still protect your skin directly and the combination of both will deliver the best results.

What is the main ingredient in a good SPF and how does it work?

Without a doubt, the main ingredients in a good SPF are Titanium Dioxide, Zinc and antioxidants.
These should all be present in every SPF you buy and are the best investment in ensuring your skin stays protected from the sun.

Exuviance Sheer Daily Protector

This product is unique because it acts as an SPF50+, moisturiser and foundation, which makes it ideal to add to your skincare routine without having to worry about uneven skin tone or applying make-up on top of a sun cream.

Virtually invisible universal tint smoothes imperfections and helps even tone while broad-spectrum UVA/UVB SPF 50 protects against photodamage, the primary cause of signs of aging.

Multi-Antioxidants and Green Tea Extract help neutralize environmental damage.

What to do if my SPF loses effect during the day?

In our British climate, SPF will protect your skin for up to 8 hours. That should be enough for most days, but during warm summer days we can be out and about for long periods at a time.

Powders or foundations with added spf 15 or 20 can't give your skin full protection, but are ideal to top up throughout the day. Make-up only has UVB protection and isn't broad spectrum.

Applying an SPF30 under your foundation every morning is still very important.

This product is ideal for topping up your SPF throughout the day or adding protection to your skin with a silky smooth matte finish in the morning.
